The Congo-Nile Trail between Rubavu/Gisenyi and Karongi/Kibuye

Driving south along the Lake Kivu shore from Rubavu/Gisenyi, we had almost reached the end of the shore road, just before Mushubati, where it should cut up to the main tarmac road to Karongi/Kibuye. It wasn’t a good road, but doable, and it offers fabulous views, people etc. Then we hit the uncrossable bridge in the picture above!

After peering into the abyss we decided the sand ladders wouldn’t do it and turned around to find another route. Again we had lovely local help and great pointing was done but it made for quite a long up hill and down dale journey. Had we been cyclists of course we could have braved the plank! But for drivers, I would suggest that until it is possible to cross this bridge outside Mushubati, the lakeshore road is best avoided in favour of the main road – and either way, you need 4WD, because the road north of the bridge is fairly rocky!
